In Alzey, Rhineland-Palatinate, Aldi sud is developing its own first branch made entirely of wood above ground level, a pilot project that is part of a broader reflection on the future of discount retail real estate. The new store replaces a historic supermarket, operating since 1985, which had been expanded several times over the decades to accommodate evolving formats and retail needs.

The previous structure, initially 629 square meters, had expanded to approximately 1.100 square meters of sales space before being demolished to allow for reconstruction on the same lot. The decision to maintain similar dimensions, while radically modifying the construction approach, reflects the brand's desire to impact the building's environmental footprint without altering the store's operating model.

The central element of the project is the use of approximately 150 tons of wood from regional supplies, a solution that reduces CO₂ emissions during the construction phase and shortens the material supply chain. According to the company, the use of structural wood represents a balance between environmental sustainability, technical robustness, and economic viability throughout the building's life cycle.

From a plant engineering point of view, the branch is designed to operate with heat pumps intended for heating and air conditioning, in combination with a large-surface photovoltaic system on the roof, made possible by a specific static design for wooden buildings. The concept is completed by electric vehicle charging stations, customer parking and spaces dedicated to cycling mobility, in line with an approach aimed at reducing emissions even during the use phase.
Thanks to detailed planning and the use of advanced prefabrication processes, the structural shell construction phase was completed in just a few weeks, with direct benefits in terms of reduced store downtime and greater efficiency of invested capital.

ALDI SÜD also emphasizes that the technical duration The durability of a wooden branch is comparable to that of traditional steel and concrete structures, overcoming one of the main prejudices historically associated with this material. The ability to disassemble and recycle components at the end of their life cycle further strengthens the long-term economic and environmental sustainability of the investment.

The branch of Alzey It is intended to serve as a laboratory to evaluate the replicability of the format on a larger scale. For the group, the project represents a concrete test to understand whether the wooden supermarket can evolve from an experimental project to a new construction standard, placing sustainable construction among the strategic levers for the evolution of discount retail.
