Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have decided to distance themselves from digital loyalty programs. The two German groups reiterate that the best price must be accessible to everyone, with no coupons to search for, no offers to activate, and no apps to download.
The move comes at a time when a growing portion of retailers are using apps and loyalty programs to personalize promotions and increase purchase frequency. According to Aldi, however, this model introduces complexity and risks penalizing those who don't own a smartphone or prefer not to share their data and spending habits.
"There's no need to activate, search, or unlock the Aldi price. It's valid for everyone," explain Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. The message will be supported by an advertising campaign built around the simplicity of the shopping experience and the lack of conditions to access the discount.
The retailer links this promise to the very structure of the format. The stores offer approximately 2,000 items, displayed with immediately legible prices, and are designed to allow a weekly shopper to complete their shopping in about 15 minutes, covering an average area of nearly 1,000 square meters.
The comparison with traditional supermarkets is clear: assortments of up to 12 products and at least double the size of the store increase choice, but also the time required to navigate. Aldi, on the other hand, continues to focus on selection, rotation, and standardization.
Affordability is supported by streamlined operational processes, volumes concentrated on a limited number of products, and long-term relationships with suppliers. Savings achieved throughout the supply chain are passed directly onto the price, bypassing promotional mechanisms reserved for a select portion of the customer base.
This choice isn't just a loyalty marketing stance. Aldi uses price transparency to reaffirm its original identity as a discount retailer: limited products, easy-to-read stores, and instant convenience. In a market increasingly built on profiling and personalized offers, simplicity thus becomes a key differentiator.
