Walmart is expanding its omnichannel strategy and introducing a new feature that will further enhance convenience for U.S. consumers: the ability to order Subway meals directly through the Walmart app and Walmart.com, with delivery in about 30 minutes or less.
The initiative, launched in select areas of the United States, represents the first time a restaurant has integrated Walmart's Express Delivery service. Customers can now receive groceries, household goods, everyday items, and freshly prepared meals in the same order.
The retail giant's goal is to further simplify the shopping experience by offering a single platform to meet diverse needs. According to Walmart, consumers make an average of 21 meal-related decisions each week, and the new solution aims to make this decision easier and faster.
Subway product prices ordered through the app will remain aligned with restaurant prices, with no hidden delivery charges. Exclusive items and menus will also be available at select locations.
“The future of retail is about bringing together more of customers’ everyday needs into one simple, seamless experience,” said Tracy Poulliot, Executive Vice President of eCommerce and Marketing at Walmart US. “Integrating Subway into the Walmart app is another step in our strategy to make everyday decisions easier.”
The partnership between Walmart and Subway has deep roots. The fast food brand is the main food service provider within Walmart stores, and the partnership dates back to 2004. Today, Subway restaurants located within the chain's stores serve millions of customers shared by the two companies.
Subway also sees the initiative as a natural evolution of the collaboration. "We've always worked to make fresh, customizable meals accessible wherever consumers are," said Damien Harmon, president of Subway North America. "Integrating delivery into the Walmart ecosystem builds on more than two decades of collaboration based on value, freshness, and convenience."
The service is already available in some Walmart stores in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Plans call for an expansion to approximately 1.400 locations by the end of the summer.
Through the Walmart app, customers can browse the Subway menu, customize each burger topping, and add the meal to their cart along with groceries and other items. Everything is then delivered via Express Delivery, strengthening the one-stop shopping model Walmart is investing in to consolidate its leadership in US retail.
