The Italian food industry is once again showing signs of economic growth, while maintaining a substantially stable trend compared to last year. According to data released by Istat on industrial production for July 2026, the sector, which includes the food, beverage, and tobacco industries, recorded a 1,4% increase compared to June, calculated on the basis of the seasonally adjusted index.

This result appears higher than that recorded for manufacturing activity as a whole, which grew by 0,3% in the same month, and also than the 0,7% increase recorded for overall industrial production. The figure therefore confirms the greater monthly liveliness of the food sector, which contributed to the recovery of Italian industry after the difficulties experienced in previous months.

The improvement isn't limited to the June comparison. In fact, on average, production in the food, beverage, and tobacco industries increased by 0,3% in the May-July quarter compared to the February-April period, while the overall index decreased by 0,1% and manufacturing activity as a whole decreased by 0,4%.

Food therefore stands out as one of the sectors capable of maintaining positive momentum even over a longer time horizon, although the intensity of growth remains limited and does not yet allow us to speak of a structural recovery.

The annual comparison shows a weaker picture. Adjusted for calendar effects, production in the food, beverage, and tobacco industries decreased by 0,1% in July compared to the same month in 2025, a result that signals substantial stability in production levels.

The first seven months of the year also confirm this situation: between January and July 2026, the sector's production remained unchanged compared to the same period of the previous year. The sector therefore failed to recover ground on an annual basis, but it managed to avoid the contraction observed in several other manufacturing components.

Overall, Italian industrial production remained unchanged in July compared to a year earlier, while manufacturing activity contracted by 0,8%. The food sector's performance, limited to a 0,1% decline, therefore appears relatively better than the manufacturing average.

The picture must also be read in light of the trend in consumer goods, which increased by 2,1% compared to June but decreased by 1,2% year-over-year. Within this grouping, the food industry represents a particularly significant component, along with beverage production and other non-durable consumer goods.

The food, beverage, and tobacco sector also accounts for 10,013% of the industrial production index used by ISTAT (National Institute of Statistics) to calculate the index. It is therefore one of the most important sectors in the entire national manufacturing system, with a significant impact on the overall performance of the industry.

The July data ultimately depict a production chain that is recovering in the short term and showing better resilience than many other sectors, but which continues to move at virtually unchanged levels compared to 2025. The 1,4% monthly growth is a positive sign, while the stability recorded since the beginning of the year calls for caution regarding the outlook for the coming months, especially considering that the July figures are still provisional.
