Müller UK & Ireland has outlined the next phase of transformation at its Skelmersdale site in West Lancashire, confirming an investment plan aimed at strengthening its industrial role in response to the expected growth in global demand for dairy products over the next decade.
The group is expanding the plant's capacity and capabilities with the aim of establishing Skelmersdale as a Flagship facility for milk drying and dairy ingredient production, while strengthening its position as manufacturer and exporter of “made in Britain” milk powder, made with milk sourced exclusively from British farms.
The central element of the plan is the construction of a new internal logistics hub, designed to accommodate up to 65 milk collection vehicles. The facility will support the daily collection of raw milk from contributing farms, improving operational efficiency, supply chain resilience, and supply continuity.
In support of the investment, Müller announced its intention to hire up to 90 new professional figures related to the logistics hub. The positions available include drivers, driving instructors, vehicle technicians, and logistics support roles, creating qualified employment opportunities in the area.
At the same time, following a discussion with long-term retail partners, the company is evaluating the transfer of fresh milk and cream production from Skelmersdale to other plants in the Müller production network in the UK. This path has led to the start of a collective consultation to assess the site's future operational needs.
Under the proposals under consideration, Skelmersdale would be reconfigured as a center of excellence for milk balancing, strengthening its strategic role in ensuring the stability of milk flows and supporting the entire British dairy supply chain. The organizational review could lead to a risk of redundancies for up to 90 positions, although the company has specified that No final decision will be made until the consultation process has concluded.. Müller also confirmed his commitment to evaluate solutions for relocation and retraining of skills within the site and the wider UK network.

According to the management, the ongoing and planned investments will strengthen the group's competitive positioning, improving quality and service for customers in the UK and overseas markets, and consolidating Skelmersdale as a key hub in the British dairy supply chain, with a long-term horizon oriented towards qualified employment and exports.
