Istat has released the agricultural price indices with the new base 2020=100, maintaining 255 products in the national basket – 109 sold and 146 purchased – aggregated into 39 groups. The survey, carried out with 54 Chambers of Commerce in 78 provinces, guarantees coverage of 75,3% of the Utilized Agricultural Area (UAA), with 6.735 monthly quotations.
Between 2021 and 2024, prices of products purchased by farmers increased by +9% in 2021, +24,1% in 2022, then decreased by -1,9% in 2023 and -4,5% in 2024. The increases were driven by energy (+8,5 pp in 2022), feed (+7,3 pp) and fertilizers (+4,0 pp). Declining in the following two years, these same groups contributed most to the decline.
For products sold, after increases of +7,9% in 2021 and +20% in 2022, growth slowed to +1,9% in 2023 and +1,1% in 2024. Among vegetables, cereals and fruit drove the two-year period 2021-2022; in 2024, wine, vegetables and olive oil stand out. Among animal products, the most recent support comes from derivatives (+0,6 pp).
At the territorial level, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto lead in terms of number of quotations, with 13,7% and 11,7% of the total, respectively. The updated basket reflects the main production trends and has not undergone changes in its national composition.
The index uses the Laspeyres formula and is based on the Economic Accounts of Agriculture for the three-year period 2019-2021. The five-year update allows the indicator to be kept in line with the economic and production reality of the sector.
