Artificial intelligence is increasingly entering the heart of the food supply chain and is now also targeting the quality control of fresh produce. Albertsons Companies, a leading U.S. food retailer, has announced the launch of "Intelligent Quality Control," a new AI and computer vision-based solution designed to support distribution center workers in quality control of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The system, developed internally by the company's technology and logistics teams with infrastructure support from Google Cloud, uses Gemini Enterprise, Vision AI, and Gemini models to analyze product images and compare them against quality standards defined by the group.

The goal is to make the assessment of highly perishable products like strawberries and grapes more consistent and rapid, reducing variability between different inspectors and accelerating the decision-making process in logistics warehouses. According to Albertsons, initial results already show increased consistency in quality assessments and improved operational efficiency.

“We developed this tool to support the work of our quality inspectors in distribution centers, and the initial results demonstrate how useful it is in improving consistency of assessments, a crucial aspect for highly perishable products such as fruits and vegetables,” said Evan Rainwater, Executive Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer of Albertsons Companies.

The system's operation is simple: the operator uploads the product image to the AI tool, which analyzes visual parameters and returns a quality score along with a recommendation. The final decision, however, remains with the human staff.

Among the benefits highlighted by the company are greater availability of qualitative data useful for future analysis and improved adherence to internal standards throughout the supply chain. The project is already active in selected distribution centers and, after an initial phase dedicated to strawberries and red and green grapes, will gradually be extended to other fresh products nationwide.

For Google Cloud, the initiative's technology partner, the project represents a concrete example of applying artificial intelligence to food retail logistics processes. "Ensuring consistent quality standards for fresh produce is a complex challenge. This collaboration demonstrates how AI can improve efficiency and quality across the supply chain," commented Jose Gomes, Vice President of Retail & Consumer Packaged Goods at Google Cloud.

The new tool is part of the American group's broader digital transformation strategy. In 2025, Albertsons introduced "Ask AI," a virtual assistant developed with Google Cloud to simplify product searches and personalize the customer shopping experience.

Albertsons Companies currently operates over 2.240 stores in the United States, 22 dedicated distribution centers, and 19 manufacturing facilities, confirming the growing focus of international retailers on AI solutions applied to both customer experience and fresh produce supply chain management.
