Areas takes a new step in its international growth with the acquisition of The Restaurant Group's concessions division in the United Kingdom. This transaction marks the group's entry into Europe's second-largest travel retail and travel catering market.
With the deal, Areas will assume management of 38 food and beverage outlets across ten UK airports, along with a workforce of approximately 2.200. The operations generate annual revenues of over €240 million and will establish the UK as a standalone business unit, set to rank among the group's five largest.
TRGC has an established presence at the country’s major airports and a portfolio that combines international brands, such as Wagamama and Giraffe, with proprietary formats such as The Curator at Heathrow, Sonoma at Gatwick and Smithfield at Luton.
The integration will allow Areas to combine its international scale with the operational expertise and airport relationships built by TRGC. The goal is to strengthen its offering, improve the traveler experience, and accelerate development in the UK market.
The acquisition also brings Areas closer to the €3 billion annual revenue milestone. Upon completion, the group will operate approximately 2.200 stores and employ over 26 people in 12 countries.
For Global CEO Óscar Vela, the move represents a significant transformation in the group's European strategy. Entering the United Kingdom expands the reach of the airport channel and balances Areas' geographic presence in key travel hospitality markets.
