Despite the current global scenario marked by macroeconomic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, the beverage sector in Italy remains a pillar of the agri-food industry. According to the research “Drinks in Italy. Themes and Trends”, presented at Vinitaly by Nomisma and Agronetwork, the sector shows signs of strong resilience, especially on the export front. With over 3.300 industrial companies, an annual turnover of 26,1 billion euros and 43.000 employees, beverages represent 15% of the value of agri-food production and 21% of its exports.

Exports are confirmed as the true driving force of the sector: in 2024 they reached 12,3 billion euros, recording an increase of 86% compared to 2014. The main outlets remain Europe and the United States, with the latter absorbing 23% of Italian exports alone. The USA are fundamental above all for Prosecco (27%), mineral waters (41%) and spirits (25%).

On the domestic market, consumption is growing again, but in a more sober and conscious way. Mineral waters are growing (+29,1% on 2013) and beer (+20,9%), while spirits (-10,7%) and soft drinks (-4%) are decreasing.

“The issue of duties introduces a vulnerability that is not yet fully quantifiable,” underlined Emanuele Di Faustino, Industry Manager at Nomisma. “At the same time, demand for healthy, low- and no-alcohol products is growing: over 50% of Italians consume more products free from, low in sugar or calories”.
