Whether in pods, capsules, or the fruit of the timeless moka pot, coffee remains for Italians an almost irreplaceable drink, to be enjoyed at very specific moments distributed throughout the day.

A product that therefore represents an assortment that is always very important even for large-scale distribution which, especially in recent years, has had to align itself – like the industry – with the profound changes in consumer habits due to the ever-increasing diffusion of capsules and pods.

A phenomenon that after having consolidated has, in fact, started further changes within the category with a constant search for quality by an increasingly demanding clientele and, at the same time, towards an ever-increasing demand for sustainability of the product as well as its packaging.

These are the themes that revolve around sell outs and that see changes (data provided by Nielsen IQ certify them) within the category segments.

The analysis of sales data for the coffee category within the Italian large-scale retail trade, in the scope that includes Supermarkets, Hypermarkets, Free Services and Discounts, refers to the year ending February 2024 and It is emblematic that the overall turnover reached 1,64 billion euros, an exceptional figure that must be analyzed in depth to understand the influence of private label products, the incidence of discount sales, promotional pressure, the dynamism of sales that vary from territory to territory, in short, an in-depth analysis that must bring us certainties about the needs of the future.
