Frozen food consumption up +1,3% in Italian retail, vegetables and fish on the rise

In 2024, the frozen food sector in Italy recorded an increase of +1,3% in domestic consumption, reaching 652.643 thousand tons, compared to 645.000 in 2023. A figure, which emerges from the study of the Italian Institute of Frozen Foods, which confirms the solidity of the sector, in constant growth in recent years.

Vegetables remain the leading category with 220.497 tons, recording a growth of +2,2%. Frozen fish follows, with a significant increase of +3,9% and 95.955 tons consumed. Frozen pizza shows the most marked growth, with +3,7% and a total of 65.688 tons. Ready meals record an increase of +0,5%, reaching 66.306 tons, while savory specialties grow by +2,4%, with 31.367 tons. Potatoes, while maintaining second place, record a slight decline of -3,1%, settling at 107.207 tons. “The increase recorded in Retail in 2024 highlights a constant appreciation for the intrinsic qualities of these products,” says Giorgio Donegani, President of IIAS.

The AstraRicerche study for IIAS reveals that 99% of Italians consume frozen foods, almost 40% have increased their purchases in the last 5 years and 4 times out of 5 frozen foods save money compared to fresh foods. The frozen food sector confirms itself as a growing sector, with opportunities for companies that invest in quality and innovation.
