Spanish retailer Dia has reached a market valuation of €2 billion, marking a turning point following the activist campaign launched in September 2024 by Western Gate. The fund, the investment arm of Luis Amaral's family office and focused on the consumer goods sector, has promoted a profound reform process, focusing on greater transparency, strengthening governance, and reviving investor confidence.

The campaign led to the creation of a coalition of over 55 minority shareholders, united by the goal of unlocking the group's full potential. At the time of the initiative's launch, Dia's stock price was at an all-time low, reflecting structural issues and severely undermined market confidence. However, the gradual implementation of a series of strategic and organizational changes helped transform the company's positioning, improving its financial and industrial perception.

A concrete response to Western Gate's requests came in March of this year, when Dia presented a five-year strategic plan at its Investor Day. The plan calls for profitable growth in Spain, considered the group's key market, expansion into new revenue streams, and strengthening investor relations activities, with a more structured and ongoing dialogue with the market.

On the governance front, the group introduced a reorganization of its board of directors, incorporating specific expertise in proximity retail, and revised its top management compensation systems to more closely align them with shareholder value creation. These measures were complemented by the debt refinancing and reverse stock split completed in December 2024, actions that strengthened the financial structure and improved the readability of the stock.

According to Western Gate, this combination of actions has significantly contributed to restoring investor confidence and supporting the group's revaluation. Francisco Santos, Director of Western Gate, welcomed the €2 billion milestone, emphasizing how the result confirms the validity of an active, long-term commitment. This approach, according to activist investors, now lays the foundation for Dia's sustainable and lasting growth in the competitive food distribution market.
