The French group E.Leclerc is accelerating its expansion strategy in local retail, with a strong focus on city centers. This segment, until now considered the preferred territory of Carrefour and Casino, is now also attracting the attention of the brand led by Michel-Édouard Leclerc.

After years of focusing on large hypermarkets and a network of suburban stores, the chain has chosen to plant its flag in urban areas, where consumer demand is increasingly shifting toward smaller, more convenient stores integrated into the urban fabric. The model aims to attract customers seeking quick shopping, convenience, and services close to their homes or workplaces.

This move represents a significant shift for E.Leclerc, which until now had preferred to grow primarily through large-scale retail formats and organic development, avoiding major acquisitions. In the absence of a significant external growth strategy, the company now intends to consolidate its position in a rapidly changing market, at the heart of competition among France's leading modern retail chains. The expansion into urban centers will allow Leclerc to more directly challenge Carrefour and Casino on their own turf, intensifying competition and expanding consumer options.
