Today, September 8, at a Social and Economic Committee (SEC) meeting, the Casino Group announced a significant reduction in staffing at its subsidiary ExtenC, which specializes in international development. The decision will result in the elimination of 24 positions out of a total of 73, highlighting a profound restructuring of the group's approach to international markets.
ExtenC, created to support the chain's expansion outside of France, has played a key role in recent years, helping to open markets, forge partnerships, and spread the Casino brand globally. However, the changing economic environment and the need to streamline operations have prompted the group to rethink its mission.
Now the emphasis is placed mainly on the model of the international franchising, seen as the most suitable tool for ensuring sustainable growth while reducing the costs and risks associated with direct management of operations. This transformation inevitably requires a review of the necessary skills and resources.
According to what has been stated, the aim of this maneuver is to adapt to the new configuration of the Casino group, which is seeking to strengthen its financial strength after a challenging few years characterized by heavy debt and increasing competition in distribution. The rationalization of its international operations is therefore part of a strategy of concentration and simplification.
The union expressed concern about the social impact of the measure, highlighting the loss of nearly a third of the branch's workforce. However, the group's desire to maintain international presence remains central, albeit with more streamlined and focused methods.
Looking ahead, Casino aims to leverage its brand appeal and accumulated experience to develop new franchise partnerships. This approach should allow the group to maintain a global presence without directly incurring the costs and operational complexities of each market. The cut announced at ExtenC therefore does not represent a withdrawal, but rather a redefinition of the ways Casino intends to grow its international footprint.
