Nuts remain among the most dynamic sectors in the Italian agri-food sector, combining local roots, a processing industry, and constantly growing domestic and foreign demand. This topic was the focus of the meeting "Italian Nuts, Protagonists at SIGEP," hosted in the MASAF-ISMEA Area at SIGEP in Rimini, where ISMEA presented the sector's key figures and trends.
According to the data presented, Italy consistently ranks among the world's top 10 nut producers, with a total annual production exceeding 280 tons. In terms of international trade, the country is the sixth-largest importer and eleventh-largest exporter globally, reflecting a complex supply chain that extends from agricultural production to industrial processing and gastronomic enhancement.
The retail channel continues to show particularly strong signs. In 2025, purchases of packaged nuts exceeded €1,1 billion, a 13% increase compared to 2024.
In terms of volume, sales exceeded 89 million kilograms, an increase of 6%, while the sector now represents approximately 6% of Italians' total spending on fruit and vegetables.
On the production front, the area planted with tree nuts has grown by approximately 6% over the past five years, a sign of a structural interest among farmers. Demand is primarily driven by the processing industry, which uses hazelnuts, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, and chestnuts as key ingredients for ice cream, pastries, and confectionery, often also destined for foreign markets.
A central role is played by the public support of MASAF, implemented by ISMEA, through communication campaigns, local promotion initiatives, and participation in major national and international sporting events. This dialogue between agricultural supply chains and artisanal know-how is part of a growing international recognition of Italy's gastronomic culture, now also recognized by UNESCO. This process, supported by institutions and the work of MASAF, led by Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, aims to strengthen the promotion and protection of Italy's agri-food excellence.
