On the occasion of the European Organic Day, FederBio relaunches some priorities in view of the G7 Agriculture in Syracuse, underlining the urgency of sustainable policies to promote an agroecological transition. The five proposed points highlight the need to: invest in the transition towards sustainable agriculture, support organic as an advanced expression of agroecology, place farmers and local communities at the center of agri-food systems, promote research and innovation, and encourage the spread of local organic production systems and food education.
FederBio, which has been committed to promoting agroecology for years, considers the transition to regenerative agricultural practices a necessity that can no longer be postponed. Maria Grazia Mammuccini, President of FederBio, states that the damage caused by intensive agriculture, both to the environment and to the economy of farmers, is now evident. The intensive model, in fact, has contributed to worsening the climate emergency and is no longer sustainable in economic and social terms.
Organic, which has over 4,5 million operators in 188 countries, is recognized as the most advanced method for applying the principles of agroecology. Thanks to its ecosystemic approach, organic farming contributes to soil fertility, reduces the use of chemicals and promotes the sustainability of the entire production system.
FederBio also highlights the importance of putting producers and local communities at the center of agricultural and food systems, ensuring a fair price for farmers and access to sustainable food for all. It is also essential to support research and innovation, especially in the agroecological field, to encourage the adoption of good agronomic practices and create opportunities for young farmers.
Finally, FederBio insists on the need to promote a change in consumption, favoring sustainable lifestyles, based on local organic products, reducing meat consumption and food waste.
