In 2023, the Grifal Group recorded an improvement in its environmental, social and governance performance, reducing energy consumption (-1,79%), fuel (-2,14%) and water (-0,79%), and increasing the recycling of waste and raw materials used. According to the 2023 Sustainability Report, the company active in protective and transport packaging achieved revenues of 37,8 million euros, up 2,5% compared to the previous year, while EBITDA increased by 27,8%, reaching 5,6 million euros. Grifal registered 21 patents in 22 countries and reinvested 9% of the value of production in research and development.
On the energy front, a 148 kW photovoltaic system generated 23.072 kWh of renewable energy, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The company also continued to replace lighting systems with LED solutions and implemented a consumption monitoring system at the production sites in Cologno al Serio and Rivolta d'Adda, with the aim of reducing energy waste. A new production line for cArtù® allowed consumption to be lowered per unit produced. The use of water, limited to washing the systems and consumption by personnel, contributed to the reduction of environmental impact.
Grifal continues to invest in projects for the conservation of natural resources and the well-being of local communities, according to President and CEO Fabio Gritti. The company is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified and adopts a plan to improve environmental objectives with progressively higher standards.
In terms of packaging, the company has reduced its size to minimize overpackaging, optimizing logistics efficiency and adopting recycled and FSC or PEFC certified paper solutions. 75% of the paper and cardboard used comes from recycled material, while 96% of the waste produced was sent for recycling. Overall waste production decreased by 17% compared to 2022, with 0,27% of hazardous waste, consisting mainly of ink and glue residues.
In 2023, the Grifal Group employed 179 people, 99% of whom had permanent contracts. The average number of training hours per employee was 22, with a total of almost 4.000 hours. In terms of workplace safety, 5 accidents were recorded in over 315.000 working hours.
