Gruppo VéGé openly opposes the Sugar Tax, asking the Government to postpone its application by one year and evaluate its definitive abolition. President Giovanni Arena criticizes the measure, calling it a punitive tax with no evidence of effectiveness on public health. “It would hit an entire production sector and worsen inflation,” Arena claims. VéGé, a leading player in Modern Distribution with 3.561 points of sale and an estimated turnover of 15,28 billion euros in 2024, reiterates its commitment to nutritional sustainability, but opposes measures lacking empirical basis.
The company emphasizes that a price increase due to the Sugar Tax could penalize both producers and consumers. The large-scale retail sector asks for a discussion with the institutions to find more effective solutions. VéGé hopes that the Government will reconsider the measure to avoid further negative economic impacts.
