Wine, fewer and fewer regular consumers

The main associations of the Italian wine supply chain launch an urgent appeal to Italian and European institutions to stop the introduction of US duties on European products. Alleanza Cooperative Agroalimentari, Assoenologi, CIA-Agricoltori Italiani, Confagricoltura, Copagri, Federdoc, Federvini and Unione Italiana Vini strongly express their concern for the economic consequences that the new tariffs could have on one of the most representative sectors of Made in Italy.

With exports to the United States worth 2 billion euros, the Italian wine sector risks suffering a severe blow, with serious repercussions on exports, employment and investments. The associations underline how the duties would hit not only Italian companies, but also thousands of American companies active in the import and distribution of Italian wine.

The consequences will be reflected on the entire commercial chain and on the purchasing power of American consumers, putting at risk the presence of Italian wine on overseas tables. "We need strong diplomatic action," the associations say, "to suspend the application of tariffs and protect a world-renowned excellence."
