The president of Fedagripesca Confcooperative, Raffaele Drei, expressed concern about Europe's ambivalent approach to synthetic food. On the one hand, the EU imposes increasingly stringent regulations that threaten traditional food production; on the other, it too easily grants authorizations for foods whose safety and long-term health impact are still uncertain.
Drei supports Coldiretti's request for greater attention to synthetic food production techniques, stressing that this is not a corporate defense, but a request for an evaluation proportionate to the impact of such innovation on citizens' health.
“Food is not only a source of well-being, but it is also linked to European history and culture,” says Drei. “Our supply chains have created virtuous productions that have improved the health of citizens. We have a biodiversity that is unique in the world and we must protect it.”
Fedagripesca Confcooperative asks Europe to be more cautious in authorizing laboratory foods, especially at a time when natural products are being accused, as in the case of wine or oil. “We cannot allow foods that have accompanied the history of humanity to be demonized,” concludes Drei. “We must take care of the food we will leave to new generations.”
