METRO Italia has obtained organic certification for its 49 stores and two logistics platforms dedicated to Food Service Distribution (FSD) and by 2026 the IFS (International Food Standard) certification process for the selection of suppliers of branded products will be completed.

The aim is to strengthen the commitment to offer customers in the Horeca sector a wide range of organic products and ensure compliance with best practices in the management of this category of products.

In fact, organic represents a rapidly growing phenomenon in the agri-food sector: in 2023, organic food sales reached almost 5,4 billion euros. The growth of the market was driven by out-of-home consumption, with an increase of +18% compared to 2021 and a value of almost 1.3 billion euros. Italy is also the leader in organic production in Europe with over 2 million hectares (19% of the total cultivated surface area).

“Ensuring quality, sustainability and an offer in line with the trends of the Horeca sector represents one of the cornerstones of our corporate strategy – – states Claudio Truzzi, Quality Manager of METRO Italia – METRO Italia has always been committed to the continuous improvement of its processes and services, an approach that has allowed us to reach important goals in this area, such as ISO, FSSC certifications and today the organic certification of stores and logistics platforms dedicated to Food Service Distribution. These awards attest to our commitment to guaranteeing our customers safe, traceable and high-quality products, in compliance with the highest standards. We are proud to be a reliable and innovative partner for operators in the Horeca sector, to whom we offer a sustainable offer in line with their needs”.

The commitment to certifications is part of the Quality, Environment and Food Safety policy of METRO Italia, which is inspired by ethical values, sustainable development and product safety. The company has an internal quality assurance system with very high standards, with the aim of ensuring the end customer the best levels of service.

The company has also started the certification according to the IFS Cash & Carry standard, of all stores and logistics platforms dedicated to the Food Service Distribution channel. The process will be finalized by 2026 and the purpose of the certification is to guarantee, through a third party, high standards of sales and service to professional customers.

METRO Italia today offers its customers an assortment of 160 organic Metro branded products across the entire food range, in addition to those branded by the producers.
