Nestlé has announced that it will gradually remove the Nutri-Score label from products sold exclusively in Switzerland, starting in summer 2025. The brands affected include Cailler and Chokito chocolate, Thomy mayonnaise, Leisi puff pastry, Incarom coffee, and Nestea, Henniez, and Romanette beverages.
The company, which in 2019 said it was a pioneer in adopting the Nutri-Score, will continue to use the system in other European countries. Nestlé explained that in Switzerland, political and commercial support for the label has declined dramatically. As a result, many of its local brands have remained the only ones to adopt it, making nutritional comparisons between similar products ineffective.
The Nutri-Score, which assigns a score from A to E based on the nutritional value of foods, is a voluntary system in the EU. However, the revision of its algorithm in 2023 has sparked controversy, leading some companies such as Danone to withdraw the label from some product lines.
Nestlé has clarified that its choice in Switzerland is not linked to the new algorithm and that it continues to support the Nutri-Score in countries where it receives government approval, such as France, Belgium, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.
