According to NielsenIQ data for the P5 period, between April 20 and May 17, 2026, the French large-scale retail market is showing mixed signals, with Coopérative U experiencing the most significant growth and E.Leclerc recovering after a few less stellar months. Conversely, Carrefour is slowing after a series of positive results, while Auchan continues to experience the greatest difficulties among the country's major retailers.

Specifically, Coopérative U remains the most dynamic brand during this period, consolidating its position thanks to a sales strategy that continues to resonate with French consumers. The cooperative chain is gaining market share and is the fastest-growing player in the national retail landscape.

Encouraging signs also come from E.Leclerc, the leading French food retailer, which is returning to stronger growth after a slowdown. The brand is regaining momentum and further strengthening its leadership, supported by a competitive pricing policy and a strong appeal to families struggling in a still challenging economic environment.

Carrefour, on the other hand, has performed more moderately. After several periods of positive results and improved sales performance, the group has seen a slowdown in market share growth. While maintaining a prominent position in the sector, the brand has failed to replicate the progress seen in previous months.

Auchan's situation remains challenging, as it continues to be the most struggling operator among the major French retail groups. The retailer continues to see its market share decline, confirming the critical issues that have long plagued its recovery.

The NielsenIQ analysis highlights an increasingly competitive market, in which the ability to offer convenience, variety, and customer loyalty continues to be the key success factors. May's performance confirms the strengthening of Coopérative U and the return of E.Leclerc to the ranks of growth leaders, while Carrefour and, especially, Auchan are called upon to react to regain ground in a constantly evolving distribution landscape.
