Heinz is expanding its sauce portfolio and focusing decisively on host foods, introducing two new products designed to complement some of the most dynamic consumer categories: chicken and fish. The Heinz Group is bringing Spicy Chicken Sauce and Fish & Chips Sauce to the Italian market, developed based on an analysis of changing eating habits and the evolution of protein consumption. The market environment is showing clear signs: 78% of Italians eat chicken on a weekly basis, and over a quarter have progressively reduced their red meat intake in favor of poultry. Fish consumption is also growing, positioning itself among the most important host foods in the country. In this scenario, sauces are becoming increasingly important as a lever for enhancing the flavor of proteins perceived as light and versatile. Research conducted on Italian consumers (Toluna Consumer Survey) confirms the power of the fried-seasoned combination: 79% consume fried chicken, a figure that rises to 84% for nuggets, while 69% regularly accompany it with sauces. The same is true for fish, with young people eating fried food on a weekly basis and a strong preference for pairing it with condiments. This trend is also reflected outside the home, where 71% of restaurants offer fish-based dishes on a regular basis.
Fried foods, a consolidated part of gastronomic culture, are now evolving toward models of "healthy indulgence," fueled by the widespread use of air fryers, used by 75% of the sample surveyed. In this domestic context, over half of consumers pair chicken and fish with a sauce, highlighting a growing demand for variety and specialization. The two new products fit into this dynamic with distinct yet complementary positionings. Spicy Chicken Sauce combines tomato, paprika, and onion with a spicy note, designed to enhance fried chicken and quick dishes. Fish & Chips Sauce, on the other hand, offers a creamy texture with mustard and aromatic herbs, suitable for both classic fish and chips and mixed fried dishes, with a more delicate flavor profile.
Both sauces are plant-based, appealing to an increasingly broad target audience that includes consumers concerned about health and plant-based alternatives, without sacrificing flavor. Versatility represents an additional competitive advantage, in line with the growing hybridization of consumption opportunities between at-home and out-of-home. The move is part of a condiment market worth approximately €175 million in Italy, with a 58% penetration, according to IRI and Nielsen data for 2025. This is a crowded sector, where innovation increasingly relies on the ability to read food trends and develop products anchored to emerging "host foods."
With this launch, Heinz strengthens its positioning in a mature segment, shifting focus from breadth of offerings to relevance. The goal is to stimulate new consumption opportunities and consolidate its presence in Italian refrigerators, where the brand is already present in one in four households. The new Spicy Chicken Sauce and Fish & Chips Sauce have been available since April in major retail channels, marking a further step in the group's innovation strategy, aimed at transforming established habits into richer and more contemporary consumer experiences.
