Walmart continues to innovate to make deliveries faster, smarter and more accessible. After investing in automation in fulfillment centers and artificial intelligence to predict demand and better manage inventory, the company is taking a new step forward by introducing cutting-edge technology: geolocation through hexagonal grids.
Thanks to this model based on geospatial intelligence and real-time data, Walmart has expanded its delivery coverage to 12 million new households in the United States. This means that even those who were previously just outside the delivery boundaries, can now receive products at home, the same day, easily and reliably.
The new system abandons traditional boundaries like ZIP codes, dividing areas into small hexagonal, pixel-like cells, each of which integrates data on drive times, slot availability, store capacity and local demand. This allows for much more precise and efficient delivery zones, without leaving “holes” in the areas covered. An additional benefit is the ability for each customer to be served by multiple Walmart stores at the same time. If a product is not available at one store, it can be retrieved from another nearby, thus ensuring a complete and single delivery, without delays or splitting into multiple shipments.
The goal is clear: to bring the convenience of online shopping to an ever-increasing number of families, improving the quality of service thanks to the intelligent use of data. Walmart finally reassures on the use of the data collected, guaranteeing anonymity and respect for its privacy policies. Innovation and trust remain the pillars of the company's strategy for the future of logistics.
