Failure to postpone the Sugar Tax would indiscriminately penalize any type of beverage and would exacerbate the demand crisis with heavy effects on the entire agri-food chain.
This is Confagricoltura's opinion on the issue at the centre of the political debate regarding the government's amendment to the Superbonus decree that would start the application of the Sugar Tax on non-alcoholic beverages from 1 July, putting an end to the numerous postponements of this measure.
The Sugar Tax and its negative effects on agri-food businesses
The Confederation has always contested the introduction of the tax which would have strongly negative effects on agri-food companies, on employment and also on consumers due to the inevitable increase in the prices of the final product.
It is also striking that the Sugar Tax is being treated differently than the Plastic Tax, which has yet to be postponed, creating an imbalance between the two measures.
The hope, concludes Confagricoltura, is that there is room to review the entire rule, avoiding hitting a sector already struggling with strong restrictions and high production costs, in the face of increasingly narrow margins.
