The multinational hygiene and food products company is continuing its recovery and growth plan, aiming to focus on its best-selling brands and reducing the group's portfolio.
After the stock market listing of its ice cream division (Magnum and Ben & Jerry's), the company last week also put its Dutch brands, such as Unox and Conimex, up for sale, as Retail Detail reports.
Now, a new step for the American giant that has decided to put up for sale The Vegetarian Butcher (formerly Vegetarische Slager), acquired at the end of 2018 and founded by the breeder Jaap Korteweg in 2007 to satisfy his need for quality plant-based meat.
The two companies began working together in 2016 by launching vegetarian meatballs in sata sauce and vegetarian meatballs in tomato sauce, marketed under the Unox brand.
The Vegetarian Butcher has seen sales growth over the years and its products are currently available in over 40.000 stores across 55 countries. Despite the brand's growing popularity and demand for plant-based alternatives, the sector has faced significant challenges, with some competitors closing down in recent years, which has led CEO Hein Schumacher to no longer see it as a viable business.
Unilever's recovery plan will affect 7.500 people and generate cost savings of approximately €800 million.
