Circana has just published the trend of packaged consumer goods (LCC) in the Outlook for September 2024. There is no particular news compared to what was recorded in the recent past, except for the awareness that the spectre of deflation is approaching not only in the discount channel, where it has already been present for some time, but also in the supermarket channel.

Let's proceed in order: packaged consumer goods, in the progressive data updated to 29 September 2024, recorded a growth of 2,1%, with a positive trend also in volume, equal to +1,6%. Promotional pressure remains high, standing at 24,3%, while the price trend is minimal, close to 0,5%.

Analyzing the trends of the macro departments, we see that the trend in food sales in volume is negative, with a decrease of 0,2%, while in value the sector marks an increase of 2,1%. The beverage sector records a slight growth in volume, equal to 0,5% and an increase of 2% in value. The personal care sector shows a significant increase in volume (+2,6%) and a growth in value of 2,9%, while the home care sector grows by 0,9% in volume and 0,8% in value.

The data is positive especially if compared with 2023, when all the indicators of sales volumes were negative, in particular that of beverages which marked a 3% decrease. This year, however, at the end of September, in terms of volume all the departments are positive.

Going into the details of the food sector, we note that fruit and vegetables recorded a strong increase in sales in volume (+5,4%) and value (+6%), proving to be the most dynamic segment in the first nine months of the year. Fresh products also showed a good performance, with a growth of 3,1% in volume and 1,4% in value. Remaining in fresh products, variable weight shows a growth of 2,7% in volume and 1,2% in value, and finally the food grocery remains substantially stagnant in volume (+0,3%), as already happened in 2023, while in value it grows by 2%. To conclude, pet care records good sales in value, but inflation is more significant, so much so that in volume the sector stands at around zero.
