Walmart has introduced “Wally,” a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) assistant designed to streamline the work of its purchasing managers. “Wally” automates time-consuming tasks, such as data analysis and reporting, speeding up decision-making.
The GenAI assistant, built on Walmart’s proprietary data, provides instant sales analytics, root cause identification of product performance, and operational support. “Wally” allows purchasing managers to focus on strategy, creativity, and innovation.
With “Wally” they can analyze complex data, such as protein sales, in seconds, without having to spend hours on spreadsheets. The intuitive interface requires no technical training, allowing them to quickly obtain useful information.
The technology includes a semantic layer to understand Walmart-specific data, processing large volumes of product data with advanced algorithms. “Wally” answers questions and provides complex calculations, automating predictions and tactical actions.
Early feedback from employees has been positive, and Walmart will continue to improve “Wally” based on their needs. The goal is to enable the assistant to act autonomously within defined parameters, performing actions necessary to implement merchant strategies.
“Wally” aims to improve efficiency and customer experience, allowing managers to focus on selecting and distributing the right products at the right time. The innovation represents a step forward in retail merchandising management.
