Danone is refusing to abandon its plans to expand its Harrogate Spring Water plant in northern England and has decided to appeal the local authorities' rejection of its planning permission request. The decision comes after the North Yorkshire Planning Commission rejected the project, despite a favorable opinion from the city's technical department.

At the heart of the controversy are primarily environmental and architectural issues. According to the commission, the landscape measures envisaged by the project are insufficient to compensate for the loss of existing trees, while the design of the new industrial complex does not adequately reflect the distinctive characteristics of the area. Danone considers these arguments unjustified, maintaining that it has already developed detailed solutions through discussions with residents and public officials.

Richard Hall, CEO of Harrogate Spring Water, expressed the company's disagreement with the commission's decision, confirming its intention to pursue legal action. According to the manager, the project meets all the required technical requirements and has a solid legal basis for a review of the decision.

The project also includes an environmental compensation program, with the creation of a wooded area of approximately 8.000 square meters, accessible to the public and located next to Rotary Wood. Danone has also committed to planting six times the number of trees that would be removed for the expansion.

The French multinational claims to have paid particular attention to the concerns of the local community, seeking to reduce the operation's environmental impact and ensure sustainable industrial development. The goal is to increase the plant's production capacity while simultaneously strengthening the economic impact on the region.

The expansion is expected to generate increased demand for goods and services from suppliers and businesses that work with Harrogate Spring Water, helping to strengthen the local supply chain.

Danone acquired Harrogate Spring Water in 2020, strengthening its presence in the British mineral water market. The brand is currently the group's only water business with a manufacturing plant in the UK, employing over 80 people.

The company has already notified local authorities of its intention to formally challenge the denial and plans to file an appeal in the coming days. A final decision is expected in 2027. Meanwhile, the project remains at the center of a debate involving industrial development, tree conservation, and the economic interests of the Harrogate community.
