Carrefour strengthens its leadership in the Spanish market with one of the most ambitious expansion plans in the sector. The declared objective for 2025 is to open at least 100 new stores, a milestone that would allow the chain to exceed 1.600 stores active in the country.
In the first six months of the year, the French group has already opened 46 stores, confirming the pace recorded in 2024, when 100 openings were exceeded in twelve months. From 2019 to today, Carrefour has opened 691 stores in Spain, investing over 150 million euros and generating more than 3.500 jobs. “We are engaged in a very ambitious expansion plan,” said Elodie Perthuisot, executive director of Carrefour, in a press release.
The strategy includes the launch of new formats such as Carrefour City, as well as the conversion of the 47 Supercor stores acquired from El Corte Inglés into the Carrefour Market, Express and Supeco formats. Currently, the group's Spanish network includes 204 hypermarkets, 162 Carrefour Market supermarkets, 1.090 Carrefour Express convenience stores and 69 Supeco discount stores. With a market share close to 10% and comparable sales growth of 1,4% in the first quarter, Carrefour consolidates its leadership in Spanish retail.
