Extra virgin olive oil: Italy grows in international markets, but there are still pitfalls

In the last few years, the Italian olive oil sector has recorded significant growth in both production and commercial terms, with a booming export and a growing interest in extra virgin olive oil on international markets.
According to Ismea data, In the first ten months of 2024, exports reached 288.266 tons, with a 50% increase in value compared to the previous year, confirming the positive trend that has characterized the sector.

This scenario fits into a broader context of valorization of Italian EVO oil, increasingly recognized for its organoleptic and nutritional qualities, as well as for its central role in the Mediterranean diet.
However, the sector faces several challenges, including international competition, the need for technological innovation and the threat posed by Xylella fastidiosa, which has hit the olive groves of Puglia hard in recent years.

In this context, specialized trade fair events such as EVOLIO Expo, currently underway at the Fiera del Levante in Bari, take on strategic importance for the sector, acting as a platform for comparison between institutions, companies and market operators. The event, in its first edition, aims to promote Italian excellence and create new business opportunities for producers, with a particular focus on export, sustainability and innovation.

An opportunity for the 619 thousand Italian companies in the sector and for the over 4.300 active oil mills, which can look to international markets as a further development channel. On the production front, according to Ismea's estimate for the 2024/2025 campaign, Puglia alone generates 45% of the national production of olive oil, equal to approximately 100 thousand tons out of a total of 224 thousand.

The trade fair event aims to be with a strong international vocation, born for promote Italian excellence on the global scene thanks to the presence of 22 buyers from strategic markets for Italy, including the USA, Tunisia and Germany, in addition to 161 exhibiting companies and 20 associations, bodies and institutions.
