Nestlé and Mars have announced a joint investment of $27 million to reduce emissions in the dairy sector, in partnership with Fonterra, one of the world's leading dairy cooperatives. The five-year program, called Farmer Forward, will involve approximately 2.000 farmers, providing them with tools, technologies and financial incentives to implement more sustainable practices.

The initiative aims to reduce Mars’ Scope 3 dairy emissions by more than 150.000 metric tonnes by 2030, compared to 2015 levels. Amanda Davies, Chief R&D, Procurement and Sustainability Officer at Mars Snacking, highlighted the importance of this investment in financially supporting farmers and achieving significant emissions reductions.

In parallel, Fonterra has announced a new incentive scheme for farmers, which will replace the previous agreement with Nestlé from 2023. The new scheme provides additional payments to farmers who achieve specific sustainability targets.

The initiative represents a further step in the transformation of the dairy sector, with a focus on reducing the environmental footprint and supporting farmers in the transition to more sustainable practices. For companies in the food sector, this investment marks a clear strategy of commitment to a more responsible supply chain and in line with the growing demands for sustainability from consumers and institutions.
