In a context of Rising crime in British retail, safety in stores becomes a strategic priority. Sainsbury's strengthens its commitment by announcing the extension of the use of facial recognition technology in some London stores, following the positive results of the first tests.
In recent years the group has already invested significantly to protect colleagues and customers: from body cams worn by staff, pioneered in the industry in 2018, up to security guards, in-store investigators, entrance barriers, protective screens and advanced product protection systems.
Despite this, incidents of assault, theft, and intimidation continue to increase. According to an investigation by the USDAW union, the 77% of shop workers have experienced verbal abuse and more than half have been threatened. The British Retail Consortium estimates approximately 2.000 episodes of violence and abuse per day in UK retail.
To respond to this scenario, in September Sainsbury's launched a facial recognition testing in two stores. Preliminary data indicate a reduction of 46% of thefts, assaults and antisocial behavior, with the 92% of offenders who did not return at the stores involved.
Based on these results, the technology is now being extended to five additional London stores (Dalston, Elephant and Castle, Ladbroke Grove, Camden and Whitechapel), while the pilot stores in Sydenham and Bath Oldfield Park will continue to use the Facewatch system.
The implementation is explicitly transparentClear signage informs customers of the system's presence, while the company monitors performance in areas where multiple stores are simultaneously adopting the solution.
Particular attention is paid to the privacyThe system boasts an accuracy of 99,98 % and each report is verified by trained personnel. The images are compared exclusively with individuals already responsible for violent or criminal behavior in participating stores; in the absence of matches, the data is delete immediately.
With this initiative, Sainsbury's reiterates a clear line: the safety of colleagues is central and directly contributes to creating more peaceful shopping environments. This is a commitment the group intends to gradually extend, carefully evaluating effectiveness, trust, and data protection to continue putting security first across the entire network.
