The UK supermarket market has seen significant market share changes over the past 12 weeks, with Tesco, Lidl, and Ocado among the winners, while Asda and Co-op have lost ground. This is according to new data released by Worldpanel by Numerator.
Tesco has consolidated its leadership, recording a growth in sales of 5,9 % and bringing its market share from 27,7% to 28,2 %. Lidl continues its double-digit expansion, with an increase of 10,8 % which allows you to reach the8,2 % share and confirm its role as the main driver of discount growth.
Online remains the most dynamic channel, with growth of11 % in home sales. Ocado, the food e-commerce specialist, has posted its best performance in four years (+15,9 %) and achieves a historic record of 2,1 % of market share.
Sainsbury's grows by 5,2 % up to a quota of 15,7 %, while Aldi stands at 10,6 % (+4,4 %). Weaker performance for Asda, which falls to11,6 % after a drop in sales of 3,9 %, and for Co-op, which goes back to 5,4 %Morrisons only grows by 2,3 %, stopping at the8,3 %, while Waitrose earns the 3,8 % keeping the 4,4 % of altitude.
Among the minor insignia, Iceland grows by 4,9 % (quote 2,3 %), while M&S, limited to FMCG products, marks a +8,8 %, the highest rate since June.
Overall, sales take-home have increased by 4% on an annual basis until November 2, with food inflation declining to 4,7 % and almost the 30 % of spending on products on promotion.
According to Fraser McKevitt, Head of Retail and Consumer Insight According to Worldpanel, "the Christmas rush is on, and retailers are responding to families' economic difficulties by focusing on price cuts rather than multiple offers. We expect the share of promotional spending to grow further in the coming weeks."
For December, Worldpanel expects lines premium private label products can exceed the milestone of 1 billion pounds in sales.
