McCain Foods, the UK’s largest potato buyer, has announced new measures to support its 250 growers, who are being hit by rising costs and climate change. A survey of 100 farmers revealed that 57% have suffered significant losses due to the weather, while 40% have seen operating costs rise due to irrigation and drainage needs.
From 2022 to 2024, the UK has seen its wettest period on record, adding to the industry’s challenges. In addition to the environmental impact, farmers are facing rising energy and fertilizer costs, partly due to the war in Ukraine. To address these challenges, McCain has announced a per-tonne price adjustment for potatoes to compensate for yield variations and an advance payment of 20% of the contract value to ease liquidity concerns.
Part of the £30 million pledge will be invested in strategic support for the purchase of new equipment, including irrigation and water storage systems. In addition, 46% of growers are planning to install renewable energy generation to diversify their profits. James Young, VP of agriculture at McCain Foods GB, highlighted the company’s commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of British agriculture.
