The canned food sector is an important part of the assortments of the Italian GDO, in fact it is worth about 2,5% of its total turnover. In recent months we have thoroughly analyzed the category by going into the merits of the trends of raw materials and the difficulty of finding them.
A few months ago we analyzed the financial statements of the main companies in the sector, discovering that not all of them suffered from the recent inflation crisis.
That study was based on the analysis of the balance sheets of those joint-stock companies that had already filed the 2022 balance sheet in September, and observed the behavior of 482 companies (about 40% of the total) divided into four turnover classes.

What we propose in this article is, instead, to verify what the consumer trends are within the sector, that is, to understand if and how the consumer has changed in purchasing in light of the increases in sales prices.
To do this we make use of the valuable research of NIQ updated in October last year, so very recent.
Going into the numbers, and specifically looking at the value sales of the category (excluding tomato products), which includes animal and plant ones, turnover generated in the year ending October 2023 was equal to 3.156 billion in all distribution channels, with a growth of +7,2%.
