Selenella's New Potatoes are coming to the sales stands, the precious spring vegetable that boasts peculiar organoleptic characteristics and nutritional qualities.
Small in size, with a thin skin, tender pulp and high juiciness, thanks to the high presence of water, they have a delicate flavour and offer great versatility in the kitchen.
The first Selenella New Potatoes arrive from Sicily, where cultivation covers an area of over 300 hectares, growing by 20%.
Right in this period, in support of its mission, Selenella has also obtained the renewal of the EPD certification, demonstrating the attention that the Consorzio Patata Italiana di Qualità places on the environment and sustainability. “We were the first in the fruit and vegetable sector to avail ourselves of the prestigious certification already in 2016 – recalls Massimo Cristiani, president of Selenella-Consorzio Patata Italiana di Qualità – In these years, we have continued our commitment to orient production in respect of the environment while at the same time enhancing the product itself”.
And now, based on these values that have always distinguished Selenella, the Consortium is ready for the new season of Novella. In the Sicilian areas, the production of Novella Potatoes began in April, to then continue with the harvest in Sardinia, Lazio and up to the Bologna area and the province of Ferrara. In the Emilia-Romagna areas, in particular, thanks to the use of specific agronomic technologies studied and applied by the Consortium, the production of Novella potatoes can be brought forward to spring, thus avoiding the waste of water in the summer months. "This year too, we are ready to offer an excellent product obtained thanks to the work of a 100% Italian supply chain, controlled and guaranteed at every stage" - underlines Massimo Cristiani, president of Selenella-Consorzio Patata Italiana di Qualità.
Thanks to the production strategy planned in the different areas along the Italian peninsula, Selenella is able to guarantee, in addition to a high quality product, also production continuity and satisfaction to all the actors in the supply chain.
Quality and certifications
To protect the quality of the product, the Selenella Consortium has chosen, right from the start, to adopt rigorous certification systems for its production: from the traceability of the supply chain with which the potato is identified from the harvesting stage to packaging, to the product certification with which the quality standard is guaranteed according to the stringent specifications of a specification that provides for the adoption of integrated production techniques aimed at protecting the environment and health, limiting the use of fertilizers and pesticides to a minimum.
In support of its mission, Selenella – Consorzio Patata Italiana di Qualità – has recently also obtained the renewal of the prestigious EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certification, or the Environmental Product Declaration in reference to the Selenella Classic Potato in the 1,5 kg format.
In 2016, the Consorzio Patata Italiana di Qualità was the first organization to avail itself of the prestigious certification in the potato and fruit and vegetable sector, obtained thanks to a rigorous certification process conducted by an independent third party, which assessed the environmental impacts of the product on each single phase of the entire production cycle, in terms of energy expended, materials used and waste released into the environment.
In recent years, thanks to the certification, the Consortium has been able to effectively communicate its strategies and its commitment to orienting production in an environmentally friendly manner while at the same time enhancing the product itself.
The benefits deriving from the certification, in addition to affecting the end customer by guaranteeing him the possibility of making informed choices with a view to environmental sustainability, involve the entire production chain, including the waste generated by potato production, sent to some processing companies and some bio-digesters.
